Recirculation system (RAS)
A Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) has a built-in water treatment system. After the treatment, the water flows back to the fishpond (recirculation). The water use is therefore low. Production parameters like temperature, amount of feed, oxygen, pH and waste content can be monitored precisely and can be optimized, because the system is completely separated from the environment. Fish cannot escape and diseases cannot spread to wild fish populations. The use of medicine and chemicals can be brought back to zero. The Netherlands has accumulated a lot of knowledge about recirculation systems in recent years. The advantages of this system are the complete control over the production process, and because the water is treated and re-used it has low impact on the environment.
